Since production began in 1932, the popular D-18 has always been a rival to the D-28 and has supported the music scene. The neck condition is good and mostly straight, and the current string height is set at about 2.8 mm on the 6th string side and 2.0 mm on the 1st string side at the 12th fret.

The Martin Dreadnought style was created in response to a request from Ditson. Production of the D-18 began in 1931, but it had the classic style of slotted head and 12th fret joint until 1934 when it adopted the now familiar 14th fret joint.
